This range of carbon films has been prepared to provide a very convenient, ready-to-use specimen support. Carbon films on copper grids are thin and highly transparent to electrons, offering fine grain and low contrast that does not interfere with specimen structure.

The evaporated platinum/iridium specimen is supplied on a perforated carbon support film that provides holes for ease of focus and astigmatism correction.
Thin cast films of Formvar strengthened with the addition of a layer of evaporated carbon on copper grids. The composite films have extra resilience and strength compared with carbon films
Formvar coated grids without a carbon layer are suitable for TEM applications up to 100kV.
Graphene oxide (GO) provides a thinner support film of higher mechanical strength, electrical and thermal conductivity compared to support films made from other materials. GO support films are available on lacey carbon grids and Quantifoils.
Holey carbon films have many uses in microscopy but for certain applications the mesh sizes of standard TEM grids are too large to support the sample.

Lacey carbon films are similar to the holey carbon films in that they have open areas but because of the fine lacey mesh structure they offer a greater percentage of open area in comparison. Lacey carbon support films resemble a random spider web-like mesh with a more open area than holey carbon films. They are also ideal as support films for adding graphene and graphene oxide films.
