Tapping (AC Mode) Mode In Air

Tapping (AC) Mode is the most common AFM technique for topographical imaging. It is generally more versatile, gentler on the tip and surface for a wide range of sample types, while still yielding high resolution images.

The probe is mechanically oscillated by piezoelectric or photothermal actuators at or near resonance; and interacts with either the shorter-range repulsive forces (repulsive mode) or the longer range attractive forces (non-contact mode).

An aluminum reflex coated probe is the go-to for typical tapping mode in air, however gold is also a common alternative option.
